Protocol!

Mariana Antelo
Protocol
Ben Fink
Ben came in the room, went online and put up Charlie sheen v muammar Gaddafi... he said it had nothing to do with what we were talking about in class, he just thought it was funny.
He wrote the program on the board, it reads:
-Housekeeping
-On the reality based community and the legacy of Hayek. Rand
-Delillo- opening moves
-Difficultation
….Ben came in and took attendance and asked people to start sitting somewhere else. ..We have a few people missing. (Marika)
Housekeeping: Ben tells the class he is up to speed on protocols and difficultations. Other grading will be coming soon.
Ben also tells the class that on Thursday he wants to spend time talking about ideas for truth for our rough draft due next week on Thursday. (Give some thought) we will be discussing them.
Ben asked the class if there were any questions on external writing. (Few people needed handouts)
Ben mentioned that he thought of so many ways to start class off, but he ended up asking...” did u like white noise??”
On the next couples weeks we taking a step back, going to go on a philosophical register. Keep reminding ourselves that even when we are reading a novel that has nothing to do with current event... there is still significant symbols in there.
White Noise was published in 1985.it talks about the 80’s. One of the ways Ben reads the book is that the book is set in the world that Hayek and Rand envisioned.
Ben tells the class to take out a notebook! Come on people!! (What he is saying is important!)
By 1985 in a lot of what we call a western world. Leaders have come to power that very much draw their ideas about society from people like Hayek and Rand and people that came after them...Margaret F. 2 important things: “ There is no alternative” there is no alternative to market capitalism on Hayek and we will do anything to break it. Because that’s how things should run and will run. #2 there is no such thing as society. There are men and woman and family. Late 70s to early 90s. These ideas are still with us.
Ron Johnson, all he knows about economics he learned from Rand.
SHOW AND TELL:
Charlie sheen, again, not related what we talking about, just thought were funny.
The reality based community. A blog post. It comes from a New York Times story writing 2004. Ron H. Ben read the blog post. Last sentence oh third paragraph... “Will be left to study what we do”
--it’s not new. There are not ideas. In response to story, some liberal smartass created the blog. Entitled to own opinion but not owns facts.
Holiday gas station... blue planet gas. Make a lot of money. Face book discussion? Tea partiers David K.?? Malcom Kirkpatrick.
Ben would argue... no collectivization (RaNd) say its bad. Only indivual men and women. Point is…all is still here. Consumptions of world mediated by consumer products. We are sketching how history works in contemporary history culture… hope it’s helpful?
Comments questions thoughts??... Take out delillo...p.24. conversation between Jack and Henriech… book more or less realistic.. But according to it Sophie it speaks truth.
Ahmed—brought up talking to convict. Beginning of ch. 6 & p. 44!!
One more thought…there is a trader among us my friend... who is that trader?? (Ben Voice) Hungfa was singled out. Jack didn’t talk much... Murray understood more. Had more to say, Jack is giving us information from other people. & Mandy agrees!
Halle says Jack is wrapped up with history within his family and his own family... Hitler is part of jack’s history. And Murray tries to find history somewhere else. Jack views Murray’s history in negative way.
Alyssa-Jack was creating his own history, but more concerned about future and dying.
Jacks obsession with dying has to do with how he understands history??---BEN.
Ben wanted to see if we could take some implicit theory. One thing he didn’t explain that well, when he says Jack is making an argument because he is a narrator and he is presenting us with these events and has a bias in it.
30 second theory--- Jack is 1st person narrator—talking from his own position. As oppose to a 3rd person narrator—who is often but not always considered omniscient (knowing everything)
All narrators should be considered unreliable.—wayne booth.
DIFFICULTATION---Sophie and Brittany and Ahmed
Take out sheet of paper and write down thoughts on delillo and what u thought was interesting. (Break into different groups) groups of three.
Me, tom, and Mandy
Tom-chapter was short was nice to go through.
Mandy- thought there were odd conversations with Jacks son. Never gave name of school he worked for… what college it was??? (We don’t know)
Than the difficultaters told us to pick one yellow card and two concepts, which were the purple cards.
--ahmed—before start discussing there is a guiding question—how do their relationship between the 3 things u have build a picture of being a human in these world?? How does it define or compose human/world??
We grabbed... JACK HITLER & SEX...we are having a hard time connecting these concepts to build a picture of being human.
(Heidi brought up her partying in Yale & talking drunkenly to this one guy about the world spirit.)
Back to difficultation, we are trying to build a concept with our connections.
Jack is in the center...groups that talked about Jack...take a marker and while explaining draw out the connections we saw.
Sex is the world. Without sex we wouldn’t exist... JACK AND HITLER wouldn’t exist.
Jack puts on an act...p.83. he looks different when he is not in class and off campus. He was offended and made him want to shop. This hurt Jack immensely…p.38. Here we don’t die we shop!
Selfhood and consumerism… Hitler helps defined Jacks self hood.
p.17... Hitler gave me something to grow into and develop towards. I’m the false character that follows the name around…HEGEL!
WE don’t know Jacks degree and he doesn’t know German.
Running out of time! As many thoughts as they can write them on the big white sheet of paper.
(Mandy posted SEX on Glenn Beck!! Bahahahahha everyone laughed.)
At the end of class the white sheet of paper was like a big spider web. ---picture Above!
