SMH @ the Tea Party

Zernike's article says the Tea Party wasn’t just created in spite of Obama. Which I think is absolutely false. After reading about the tea party on the cbs news website, I found out they’re a group of racist people who like to nit pick at Obama, no surprise there. When Obama was running for president the black community was so happy and proud, but in a way a lot of people I know thought it would be a cold day in hell before a black man became president of the United States. He had to bend over backwards and walk on eggshells just because he was black. During debates, he couldn’t lash out, he had to be on top of his game at all times. I remember classmates of mine starting a riot in class because my teacher referred to Obama as “bi-racial” and refused to call him black, which is what every other brown skinned person of color is referred to as despite what they’re mixed with, which goes way back to the “one drop rule” that states any person with one drop of negro blood, is a negro. I felt like it was hard for everyone to see past his skin color and consider his views, I remember talk shows telling celebrities who were democrats that the only reason they wouldn’t vote for Obama is because they were racist. Which was definitely true. But the America saw past that and elected him as president. He’s faced some really hard criticism, and has been called a bad president, but in my eyes I think he’s doing okay for the hand he was dealt, and besides, when has there ever been a really good president during a recession anyway? President Hoover sure wasn’t much help. Adorno said people in power can play off of the “lone wolf” tactic by manipulating people into believing outrageous things that aren’t true, that they don’t fully expect them to believe but they’ll go along with it because someone in power said it. That is a perfect example of what the Tea Party is. most of the people that took the survey in general blame President Bush than Obama for the current state of the economy, but of course not the Tea Party members. Once again, no surprise there.

  1. I totally agree with you. The tea party is what I like to call the B.S party... they gather and show people that they are in favor of helping the country, but what they are really in favor of is impeaching the President. They are a bunch of low life scum bags who need to be taught a lesson. They are also a bunch of hypocrites because they are all rich as hell, and they are complaining for paying an extra dollar in their taxes; I don't know how that hurts them. Seriously, Obama has done so much for the country, and I don't know why people are bitching at him. I mean come on, the dude's been in office for only two years, and they are already pissed; we took Bush's crap for EIGHT YEARS.

  2. I don't think the Tea Party formed just because of Obama, but I definitely think his election was a huge factor. There is an appalling amount of racism within the Republican Party and the Tea Party -- both latent and explicit. I can't believe, actually, how much they get away with, and how ignorant many of them seem to be of their own bigotry.

Your mention of the "one-drop rule" reminded me of a video I watched last semester, called "Cornered" by Adrian Piper (black female artist and philosophy professor). In it she confronts the assumed white audience with the fact that although she is very light-skinned, she is black -- and that in fact, the majority of white Americans are black, according to the one-drop rule. Watching it made me realize the extent to which all white people are 'passing' for white (which is the choice she feels she's been faced with all her life: whether to 'pass for white' or identify as black). I think everyone should watch it (maybe especially the Tea Party supporters). It really highlights all of the divides that still exist between racial groups, even among people who aren't racist -- and, particularly, the privileges white people assume and are so often blind to. (It's on YouTube if you want to watch it. :)
