Before I say anything about this talk about complete government shutdown, I would like to make one thing very clear, and I know beyond doubt that I am right. I always am. The chaos and partisan politics that threaten to tear the United States government apart is not a result of ‘inevitability’. No. Man the individual has a choice. I “reject any form of determinism, the belief that man is a victim of forces beyond his control”(1075). The Austrian philosopher, Friedrich Hayek had a similar sentiment in his Road to Serfdom: “The first need is to free ourselves of that what we have done in the recent past was all either wise or inevitable….” (237) None of these current events are spontaneous or shocking, rather they are a build up over time of government squabbling and the failure partisan politics.
This talk and threat of government shutdown is not a new concept by any means. In the past 30 years, there have been at least four major government shutdowns in the United States, the last one being in 1995. According to a “high ranking aide” in the House, “the odds favor inaction before the government runs out of money”. This all boils down to issues with money: if a new spending bill can’t be formulated by March 4th, when the old bill expires, then the government will “shut down”. But from what I can see, it’s just a bunch of finger pointing, Democrats whining at Republicans to get their act together, and Republicans digging their heels in about government spending.
As for what should be done? Well frankly, as an individual, you need to do what is best for YOU! Do the most you can to ensure YOUR happiness, as you are the only thing that matters! I personally don’t agree with either the Democrats or the Republicans. I think that any legislation that infringes on the freedom of the individual is atrocious and must be stopped. So raising taxes to fund programs? I think not. What the United States need is a laissez faire economy, with as little government intervention as possible. So as an individual, don’t concern yourselves too much with government spending; do the most you can to make yourself happy, whatever everyone else thinks or wants is irrelevant.
There were so many issues I had a conflict with after being awoken from the dead and I couldn't have put it better myself! We must keep reminding people that yourself as an individual is the number one concern. We can't keep letting government interfere with every aspect of our lives.
