The Tea Party

The tea party movement is a group of millions of like minded people who share similar core principles supporting the United States Constitution as the founders intended. If you were to ask me what the tea party was before I did some research, I can honestly say I wouldn’t know what to say about them. After doing some research and talking to my dad about what the goal of the movement was, the more and more I liked the ideas they had. My family is conservative and after listening to my dad’s options of the government, I can safely say I agree with him. The Tea Party usually takes a more conservative outlook on issues so therefore, I would have to agree with some of the ideas of the Tea Party movement. Although in the videos we watched the people were mainly shown as being ignorant and dumb, I believe they are actually pretty smart people with a good goal in mind. To put it simple, if you max out your credit card…you should work to pay it off, not get a new credit card. We should work to pay off the debt we are in and make sure that we don’t go down the same path ever again. We should learn from our mistakes. I guess that is my view on how things should be done.
I thought it was interesting how in Zernike’s article, they compare the “I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore” scene from the film, Network, to Glen Beck. They both have a unique way of getting their message across.
As a movement, the tea party is not looking to form a third party. They are instead trying to reform all political parties so that the principle of the constitution is the foundation in which the United States runs. According to the Poll of CBS/New York Times poll of Tea Party members, most of the members don’t like the direction our country is going and disapprove of Barack Obama’s ways of running the country.

  1. The problem with the Tea Party is its over-simplification of many core political issues. Most people don't go out and get a new credit card because their first one is maxed out. People are forced into debt for many reasons. Most people on welfare aren't on it because they want to be, it's because they have no other choice. It usually isn't their fault; there are many factors at play, including historical racism, geographical poverty, and lack of access to a good education. My issue with the Tea Party is not its dissatisfaction with the direction our country is going. I agree with the there. What I have an issue with is the lack of recognition or acknowledgement of white privilege, class privilege, and entitlement. Not everyone can pull themselves up by their own bootstraps, because not everyone has the bootstraps to begin with.

  2. While I as well agree with some of the ideas that the Tea Party stand for, I feel as though they are a bit too gung-ho about all of the issues with the government and congress that need to be reformed, yet very less clear about how they think these issues should be resolved. Also, while I agree that people should be held accountable for their own debts I gotta agree with Hallie on the fact that not everyone can be lumped into one group. Social stigmas, race and class prove that there are to many variables to provide the same solution for all people.
