Libya

I read an article by Massimo Calabre in time.com that had to do with Libya and why "we are going to war." I saw some Loewen in there, some of the things that stuck out to me were: - Obama said, “we have every reason to believe that Gaddhafi would commit atrocities against his people. Many thousands could die. A humanitarian crisis would ensue. The entire region could be destabilized, endangering many of our allies and partners. The calls of the Libyan people for help would go unanswered. The democratic values that we stand for would be overrun. Moreover, the words of the international community would be rendered hollow.” i feel like this fits with the "international good guy approach." (224) because this is what America tries to portray. This country is in danger so we must do something about it. because like Loewen said "The United States is a Kind of Salvation Army to the rest of the world." like in textbooks, they don't necessarily point of the bad, or they do but in someway or another there was "good intentions" so that makes it ok. Another quote that i found interesting was "Gaddafi is a thug. In the 1980s he launched repeated terrorist attacks against Americans." <--- SO maybe now the truth comes out?.. maybe this is the real reason why we are attacking Libya. They perhaps not want us to know the real truth behind this whole "war" that might happen. like Loewen said, " Even if students (in this case just people) are not personally affected, they will have to deal with the manipulation of the world." (224) Although there are many different points of view on Libya whether this is right or wrong Loewen makes a great point when he says, " They see our policies as part of a morality play in which the United States typically acts on behalf of human rights, democracy, and 'the American way.' When Americans have done wrong, According to the text books view, it has been because others misunderstood us, or perhaps we misunderstood the situation. but always our motives were good." (221) Whether or not this is correct, i think we wil never trully know the "truth" about everything and why decisions our made. supposively they are for the better, but than again what action taken has made us, the U.S better?

  1. With the comparison of the Libya invasion with the Iraq invasion, I do see how people try to relate the two. From what I understood, the Iraq invasion was to destroy the WMD (weapons of mass destruction) that Bush believed was in Iraq. As for Libya, I don't know much to know what Obama's reason was to invade Libya yet. I do feel like the US is just using the American government and the country of the United States to get to their own selfish needs from other oil-rich countries like Iraq and Libya. On the other hand, maybe there is a hidden truth that he government is trying to cover up by making war with other countries.
