This is my blog from last weekend, as I was unable to sign in for some reason on Sunday and Monday this week.
I did some looking when I went to write my original blog post, and found this article talking about terrorists, and while it was interesting and relatable, I did a quick news search today and found something that directly relates to Loewen. One of the big stories today on Fox News discusses a new bill in California that would require textbooks to include information on the LGBT movement. It talks about the effect that having this information in textbooks has on students, specifically related to bullying. The article gives different viewpoints; both for and against the bill. This is a perfect example of Lowen's argument that textbooks omit certain aspects of history, especially if it makes America look bad. In the case of the LGBT movement, Loewen would argue that we wouldn't want in our textbooks that people who didn't specifically fit into our gender and sexuality binaries were harassed, sometimes to the point of suicide, or were denied the right to be married, as well as many other things that would make the American people look bad. Loewen discusses in his piece that we have to constantly have a happy ending when it comes to the United States, and this is a prime example of how that isn't always the case, even today. If this kind of history was included in textbooks, maybe we wouldn't still be having these kinds of issues because the general public could learn from an early age the decisions and consequences of these past mistakes.
Here is the article if anyone is interested:
