Who's the good guy and who's the bad guy?
I came across an article featured on the Tehran Times website that sourced the Washington Post entitled Will Libya become Obama's Iraq? In the article the comparisons between Bush and Iraq and Obama and Libya are discussed and addressed by President Obama. The President himself says that this intervention is "prudent and wise" and that Gaddafi will not be attempted to be overthrown by force, "we went down that road in Iraq". There are other obvious differences between the Iraq situation and the Libya situation. One of the major differences that I noticed, in relation to what Loewen said about the need for the United States to be the "international good guy" (Lowen 221) was that there was no United Nations resolution in the Iraq situation. The UN took a front against the no fly zone and other attempts with Gaddafi that were not met. Originally we were not the only ones going after and seeking out Libya as our "project" to fix. I also believe that after there was such outrage and lack of support for the Bush administration and the Iraq war towards the end, including the negative image they recieved in pop culture, the Obama administration has more than enough resources and examples of what not to do and how not to handle situations that can be seen as similar. Although I can agree that there are times when it seems that the United States is putting our nose in any business that it can squeeze into world wide, I do not believe that the Libya situation is necessarily an extreme example of this. Obama was acting in the interest of the American people as well as playing our part as a member of the United Nations. The timing may be quesitoned or the motives but the flack that is being put out there by different sources or the Tea Party is somewhat unnecessary. Also, the insinuation that this will negatively effect Obama's reelection chances in 2012 is hard to imagine if you choose to compare the Obama/Libya situation to the Bush/Iraq situation. Its all a matter or perspective of ultimately who is the good guy and bad guy or what is the right thing for America to do, and the right action to be taken at different times in our country's history. No move will have 100% supporters and this is just another example of that but I do not believe that the Libya situation can be used to support the idea that we always try to be the "international good guy" (Lowen 221)

The Bush Iraq situation was different because it actually HELPED Bush get re-elected. You might be asking why? Well it was a major help in Bush's re-election because when Bush went into Iraq, people got really happy. 9/11 had happened and the American people wanted REVENGE! There was no one to take it out onto except Iraq! Even if they had nothing to do with it.... revenge was still pretty sweet on the Middle East (according to many... not me). People were full of hatred towards the Middle East, so any harm that comes their way, was good and Bush did exactly what the American people wanted. That's why Iraq is a lot more different than Libya, Iraq actually did Bush some good, where Libya's arguable.
